Mars

It is the second smallest of all the planets. Its reddish color in the sky caused it to be assigned to the God of War in ancient times. In classical times, the year began with the month of Mars (March), and today we still dedicate the second day of the week to it in Latin languages. Numerous automatic missions have visited it since the 60s of the last century. It is the planet we know best after ours.

Diameter

Mars is 6,780 km in diameter and here it is 7 mm. On this scale it would be like a grain of corn.

Duration of the day

The day of Mars, with a duration of 24 hours and 40 minutes, is a little longer than the Earth day.

Year duration

On Mars the year is 687 Earth days, almost like two years on our planet.

Distance to the sun

227.9 million km. On this scale are the 227.9 meters that separate you from the Sun, located in the observatory.

Satellites

It has two small, irregularly shaped satellites: Phobos, 22 km in diameter and Deimos, 12 km in diameter.

Composition

It is a solid planet made of rocks similar to those on Earth and with a thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide.

Surface temperature

It oscillates between 143 °C below zero and 35 °C positive almost on the same day.

Gravity

We would notice 38% of the force of attraction that we notice on Earth. A 50 kg person would weigh 19 kg. And you?

Density

Its average density is 3.9 g / cm³, similar to that of limonite.

Did you know...

… That the atmospheric pressure at surface level is 100 times less than on Earth? It is equivalent to the pressure that we would notice on our planet at an altitude of 33,000 meters.

… That on the surface of Mars the low atmospheric pressure makes the liquid state of water impossible? There can only be ice or gas.
